Seaton Regeneration Area Plan :: Design and Access Principles
Design Proposals
Appearance
5.30 It is also important to address the need for changing character across a new development of this scale. With this in mind, distinct development character areas have been defined which require a specific design approach.
5.31 Within the design proposals for the site, each character area (shown opposite) does not seek to prescribe any particular architectural style or typology, but to establish the key urban form, massing and scale characteristics appropriate within each area.
5.32 The Masterplan aims to establish the urban design vision for the egeneration area but does not intend to define architectural styles. The Masterplan does, however, establish an overall aim of design quality in architecture and creates a framework within which good quality architecture can be created.
Building forms and Materials
5.33 As mentioned earlier, the local vernacular of Seaton and the surrounding settlements provides inspiration to the architectural form of the development. Within the development, buildings will be designed to form groups that interact with one another in the street-scene. The design will include a range of buildings that are varied enough to give character yet, at the same time, complement one another when viewed as a composition. As in traditional townscapes, a hierarchy of dwellings are proposed, ranging from large buildings and detached properties through to smaller terraced properties and apartments.
